Irish artist David Franklin’s paintings are concerned with the tensions between individuals and their surroundings, focusing on the intangible experiences of the subconscious. During his six-month residency at Youkobo, he has been increasingly preoccupied with physical locations in an exploration of haikyo, or abandoned buildings, which offer an intriguing alternative view of Tokyo.

Kadota Mitsumasa exhibition at Youkobo: Diagram of a tree from a Bird’s Eye View
Thursday 7 May – Sunday 24 May 2009. Opening party Thursday 7 May from 17:00. Artist talk with David Franklin 23 May from 17:00. Gallery is open from 12:00 -19:00, closed on Mondays and Tuesdays. Youkobo Art Space, Zempukuji 3-2-10, Suginami-ku, Tokyo, 167-0041. Tel: 03 5930 5009. www.youkobo.co.jp
Kadota Mitsumasa’s paintings, created using staining techniques, are transformed through the diverse and continuous duplication of colour and brush mark into unexpected visions. This repetition of distortion and erosion is like a diagram of a tree from a bird’s-eye view in paintings whose structures have no thickness.
